Shell and Wison Advance Next-Generation DMR FLNG Solutions

Shell and Wison New Energies have agreed to integrate Shell's DMR liquefaction technology into Wison's FLNG portfolio for broader third-party FLNG opportunities.

Wison New Energies has signed a collaboration agreement with Shell to advance next-generation FLNG solutions based on Shell’s Dual Mixed Refrigerant (DMR) technology.

Under the agreement, Wison will incorporate Shell’s pre-engineered DMR liquefaction solution into its FLNG portfolio. The arrangement marks the first time Shell’s DMR technology, previously used mainly in projects in which Shell holds an equity interest, is being opened to a broader FLNG market.

The collaboration covers multiple stages of FLNG project development and execution. Shell will provide technical support for DMR process integration and process-performance guarantees through the Pre-FEED, FEED and EPC stages. Wison will integrate the liquefaction process with the overall FLNG design, topsides, hull, storage system and utilities, using its EPCIC, operations-and-maintenance and yard capabilities to support delivery.

DMR joins Wison’s FLNG technology portfolio

DMR is one of Shell’s long-developed LNG liquefaction technologies. It uses two mixed-refrigerant cycles for natural-gas pre-cooling and subsequent liquefaction. Shell says the technology has operated for many years at Sakhalin LNG and has been applied at Prelude FLNG and LNG Canada. The company cites liquefaction efficiency, heat integration, compact layout and adaptability to different operating conditions among its characteristics.

The agreement also broadens Wison’s FLNG liquefaction technology choices. Wison’s published standardised FLNG products cover capacity ranges of around 0.65 to 6 million tonnes per annum, with Chart IPSMR technology forming a mainstay of its existing offering. The 2.4-mtpa NGUYA FLNG, which has been delivered and entered operation, was Wison’s first large floating liquefaction facility to combine Chart IPSMR technology with an SPB tank system.

With Shell’s DMR solution added, Wison can offer another mature liquefaction option alongside IPSMR for different gas compositions, production scales, energy requirements and hull-space constraints. Wison has listed a DMR liquefaction module among the solutions it plans to highlight at Gastech 2026 alongside products such as Smart FLNG.

Expanding third-party FLNG opportunities

For Shell, the collaboration also expands the commercial route for DMR. Shell has long combined LNG technology development with investment and operations in large LNG and FLNG projects, and DMR has mainly been deployed alongside its own projects. Through the collaboration with Wison, which has overall FLNG design, engineering integration, EPCIC construction and operations-and-maintenance capabilities, DMR is moving into a wider third-party FLNG market.

Wison has been expanding its floating-energy business. The 2.4-mtpa NGUYA FLNG has achieved its first LNG cargo in the Republic of the Congo, while the 1.2-mtpa Genting FLNG in Indonesia is under construction. The company is also building a large floating-facility base in Qidong for large and ultra-large FLNG and FPSO projects.

The agreement does not disclose a first specific FLNG project using the joint DMR solution. Whether Shell’s liquefaction process and Wison’s engineering and construction platform achieve a first commercial application will be a key next development to watch.
