Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC) has received a letter of award from QatarEnergy for the MM EPIC2 package on the Maydan Mahzam field redevelopment. Its scope covers the engineering, procurement, construction and offshore installation of more than 100 kilometres of subsea pipelines, power and other subsea cables, umbilicals and associated facilities. The package value and execution schedule have not been disclosed.

COOEC said the award took the value of contracts it has signed in the Middle East over the past three years above RMB50 billion. That figure represents cumulative regional contract intake, not the value of the MM EPIC2 package alone.

Maydan Mahzam is one of Qatar’s earliest offshore oilfields. It was discovered in 1963, started production in November 1965 and lies about 110 kilometres northeast of mainland Qatar. QatarEnergy’s life-extension redevelopment plan includes 45 new wells targeting the Arab A, B, C and D reservoirs, a new wellhead jacket, and upgrades to production facilities and pipelines.

Oil and associated gas from the field are routed to the PS-2 production complex for separation. Crude is then sent by pipeline to the Halul terminal for storage and export, while associated gas is transported to Mesaieed for processing. As new wells and facilities are connected, subsea pipelines will carry production, while power cables and umbilicals will provide electrical, control and chemical-service links. MM EPIC2 is therefore a critical interface between the new offshore facilities and the existing production system.

The redevelopment is being delivered through separate packages. PTSC Mechanical & Construction received the EPIC1 letter of award in September for new offshore facilities, brownfield modifications, connections and systems integration. COOEC’s EPIC2 package focuses on the subsea pipeline, cable and umbilical network. Design interfaces, offshore sequencing and commissioning links between the packages will be important to the overall schedule.

Before MM EPIC2, COOEC had already secured Qatar’s Bul Hanine BH EPIC project and a share of the North Field Production Sustainability COMP5 package. The BH-EPIC1 and BH-EPIC2 contracts are worth about US$4 billion in total and entered fabrication in Qingdao in September. COMP5 is being executed with Saipem and has a total contract value of approximately US$4 billion, covering two offshore compression complexes.

The three projects span fixed platforms, brownfield modifications, subsea networks and offshore compression facilities. COOEC’s Qatar portfolio has therefore expanded from individual fabrication packages into several types of full-chain EPIC work. The cumulative contract intake provides a longer pipeline of engineering, procurement and fabrication activity, but delivery will require coordination across Chinese yards, international suppliers, offshore installation assets and multiple project interfaces. Converting the awards into scheduled progress and revenue is now the next test.
